Like many other Americans, quilters have been influenced and inspired by the historic candidacy of Barack Obama. The  quilt  shown here was featured in the November 2, 2008 edition of the Start Your Week With a Quilt newsletter. It was created by Elisa Woods and is the first quilt in a series called Be the Change – The Obama Quilt Series.

“As an artist, I created a piece, though simple, visually represents Barrack Obama as a leader who can inspire people to effect change,” says Elisa.

Be the Change  is the first in a series of quilts using various Obama images along with a quote that evokes pause. Gandhi’s quote, “be the change you wish to see in the world” is written using green and red fabric paint. Elisa says she emphasized the phrase “change the world” because she believes it is up to us.

This 32 x 39 inch quilt is part of the Grounds Coffeehouse Exhibit and is offered for sale for $250.00. For information about Elisa’s quilts, contact her at quiltedmemories1@gmail.com.

Sometimes simple is best. Every quilt is not intended to be worthy of the Smithsonian Museum, and every beautiful quilt is not complicated. Sometimes it is best to let the fabric do the talking. Such is the case with Village Values  created by Aleathia Chisolm. It was featured in the October 5, 2008 edition of the Start Your Week With a Quilt newsletter.

Village Values is composed of lush, authentic strips of African fabrics. It is the interplay of the fabrics that makes this quilt stunning. The African fabrics are offset by a black border that speaks to you. Aleathia has embroidered the words “culture, purpose, unity, and community” in the borders.

Village Values, which measures 51 x 81 inches, is offered for sale at the Fabric Art Exhibit which began today at the Grounds Coffeehouse, Sky Loft Condos, 898 Oak Street, Atlanta, GA. The sales price is $475.00, and the exhibit continues through November 8, 2008.

My Street

My Street was featured in the September 28, 2008 edition of the Start Your Week with a Quilt newsletter. It  was created by Aisha Lumumba. Although it is hard to see from the picture, this spectacular quilt is composed of the most humble of quilt blocks, the log cabin block. The log cabin block is one of the first blocks new quilters learn because it is simple and very forgiving of inaccurate seams. The block is composed of strips that are sewn around a center square.

Aisha, however,  takes the log cabin block to a new level by creatively choosing fabrics and color combinations that carry out the theme of  My Street. She has also embellished the quilt with beads. My Street measures 60 x 33 inches.

My Street will be offered for sale at the Fabric Art Exhibit which begins next Sunday at the Grounds Coffeehouse, Sky Loft Condos, 898 Oak Street, Atlanta, GA. The sales price is $2000.00. You can meet Aisha at the “Meet the Artist” reception Sunday from 12 noon – 6 p.m.
