African American Quilters of Northeast Georgia Sponsor Exhibit

A quilt exhibit entitled  Hands That Can Do:  African American Quilters of Northeast Georgia opens Tuesday, October 5th,  2010 at 10:30 a.m. The exhibit, which will be held at the Lyndon House Arts Center, 293 Hoyt St., Athens, Georgia, will run through January 19, 2011.

A symposium on Harriet Powers will be held in conjunction with the exhibit. The symposium will be held in the Community Room of the Lyndon House Arts Center, Saturday, October 30, 2010 from 9:30 – 3:30  p.m. The panelists will discuss topics that include the quilts of Harriet Powers, textile traditions of West Africa, and African American quilters in northeast Georgia.

Special guest Kyra Hicks will be on hand to sign her books.  Among other books, Kyra is the author of This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers’ Bible Quilt and Other Pieces. There will also be an African market of textiles from West Africa.

The event is sponsored by the Georgia Humanities Council.
